We started our Italian escapade with three days in Rome, which made a big impression. We spent the first day visiting the Vatican and then all the other monuments of the Eternal City.
We saw: the Vatican Museum, St Peter’s Basilica (climbing to the very top of the dome is a real challenge, over 500 steps), St Angelo Castle, Piazza Navona, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain (where they fish out €3,000 in coins daily), Colloseum, Arch of Constantine, Roman Forum, Circus Maximus (we had a picnic on the ground where chariots used to race), Altar of the Fatherland, Tiber Island, Largo di Torre Argentina (where Julius Caesar died), Santa Maria della Vittoria (with Bernini’s Ecstasy of St Teresa), Triton Fountain, Capuchin Crypt (thousands of skulls and bones), Spanish Steps, Villa Borghese with its park, San Luigi dei Francesi (with two paintings by Caravaggio) and many other places.
